Anyone wanna guess what I just payed in sales tax on my Miata? 1990, 209k miles, rust like this, payed $950 for the car
Anyone?
!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!
On a $950 car. All because F@#$ing NADA doesn't take mileage into account for cars older than 20yrs, so it says my Miata is worth $3400 (low retail).
All told, in getting it insured, registered, and buying plates, I've now spent $999.50. Also know as $49.50 more than the car cost. Sometimes I really hate my state (maybe more than sometimes)

Don't you tell them how much you paid? I sold my Ranger for $4500 and wrote $1000 to get the guy a lower tax bill. Or is this just a CA DMV thing?

Wow that sucks. If i bought a car for a dollar in my state, I'd pay $.05. On the registration forms there is a line to write in what you paid for the car, That is what the sales tax is based on. So it's mainly done on the honors system, if you bought the vehicle private party, with no lien on the vehicle. I suppose paying taxes based on the "value" rather than the cost makes more sense, but it also sucks, because no one pays NADA value for a car, Ever.

Some States bases sales tax on the value of a vehicle rather than the price. In Wi they would only do this if you tell them you paid nothing for it. So if your ever registering a vehicle in Wi and you got it for free. on the rego forms put purchase price at 5 bucks for something.

NADA is a sham. It's only propose is to fluff up prices for dealerships. KBB and edmunds are usually much more accurate.

Did you not get a bill of sale? I know when I purchased a motorcycle a couple years ago, I didn't have a bill of sale and they used the property tax value [I think] to calculate the sales tax. This was in South Carolina by the way. Might be something to keep in mind the next time you buy a used car, especially one way under "typical" value.

Jesus... Even in NY we pay tax on the sale not the imaginary value. Since something's "value" in economic terms is only as much as someone will pay for it. Which in this case is the number with the funny S on the bill of sale.
What if you bought out of state?

"from a private party, the purchaser must pay the 6.25% state sales tax on either the purchase price or the
National Automobile Dealers Association
clean trade-in value
,
whichever is higher
"
Welcome to my state. They don't care whats written on the bill of sale, and NADA doesn't calculate using condition or mileage. It wasn't purchased at "under typical value", arguably I paid a bit too much

New-Brunswick Canada is like that. you pay tax on either the blackbook value or the sale price, which ever amount of the two is highest is the amount you pay.
But now I live in Alberta and do you want to know how much you get charged for tax on a private sale car? ZERO! not one cent!
if you buy a car new or used from a dealership tho then you need to pay tax but it's only 5% on the sale price they don't give a damn what the car is technically worth in the blackbook.
To register, insure and plate project free mazda it cost me $162.50 for the year.

Pretty sure that's technically aiding and abetting tax fraud, dude. And since you're only doing it to be a nice guy, not worth it especially if the person you're doing it for is just "some guy" to you. Just sayin'. I had someone make a similar request years ago on what was already a very good deal on a car I was selling (frankly giving it away, in retrospect), but I was not about to take any risks for the buyer's benefit.

That's some crap. I would definitely contest it with a strongly worded letter and phone call. By the way, what I meant by "under typical value" is the value of a the car in average condition for its age [vis-a-vis NADA]. So, by my magical mind dictionary, you paid under typical value. I'm sure there is a proper term for it, I just don't know it.
